A guide for parents and junior athletes

Junior pathways & racing

There is no single route through junior triathlon. Some athletes come for fun and confidence, while others enjoy racing and want to explore regional or national opportunities. Both are equally welcome at Bicester Triathlon Club.

Start with the athlete, not the pathway

Progress should be enjoyable, age-appropriate and compatible with school, family life and other sports. Club sessions provide an excellent foundation. Extra training and higher-level racing are options, not requirements.

The journey at a glance

Opportunities develop as athletes grow

Age groups are based on the athlete's age at the end of the racing year. Exact categories, events and selection policies can change, so always check the current event information.

1

Getting started

TS0, TS1 and early TS2

Build skills, confidence and enjoyment through Saturday club sessions, local activities and beginner-friendly races.

2

Developing

TS2 and TS3

Continue club training, explore advanced sessions when ready and choose whether regional racing or component-sport clubs appeal.

3

Moving forward

Youth and Junior

Training becomes more individual. Athletes may focus on regional racing, Super Series events, an academy or a balanced mix of sports.

Younger age groups

Learn, play and try racing

Training

Saturday club sessions are usually the main focus. Junior parkrun, family rides, swimming and other sports can complement this without turning every week into a full training programme.

Racing

The Regional Junior Series offers friendly events across the region. Athletes can enter individual races; British Triathlon membership is normally needed for results to count towards the overall series.

Good next step: choose one local event that looks fun and ask a coach what to expect.

Middle age groups

Develop skills and discover preferences

Training

Saturday sessions remain important. Stronger TS2 athletes and TS3 athletes may be ready for advanced cycling, running or swimming sessions. Some also join an athletics or swimming club, often selecting only the sessions that fit their overall week.

Racing

The Regional Junior Series remains the natural starting point. Athletes who enjoy higher-level competition may also work towards selection for the Inter-Regional Championships.

Remember: joining another club is optional. It is perfectly reasonable to combine Bicester Tri training with school sport and other interests.

A national opportunity for TS2 and TS3

Inter-Regional Championships

The Inter-Regional Championships, often called the IRCs, bring together regional teams from across Great Britain. Athletes cannot enter directly; they must be selected by their region. For most Bicester athletes, this is South Central.

Selection details are normally published with the Regional Junior Series information. Policies can change each year and may include a qualification race, series results or both.

What parents should know

  • The standard is high and selection is limited.
  • The event usually takes place towards the end of summer.
  • Selection should be a positive goal, never a source of pressure.
  • Ask the club early if your athlete is interested.

Academies and national racing

By Youth and Junior age, athletes usually build a routine around their own goals, school commitments and preferred disciplines.

Regional academies

British Triathlon Regional Academies bring together developing athletes for regular training days and race preparation. Entry is competitive and normally involves autumn trials.

Trials have typically considered a 200m freestyle swim, a 1500m track run and cycling skills. Development opportunities may also be available to TS3 athletes, depending on the region and current policy.

Super Series

From Youth age, athletes can explore the British Triathlon Super Series: national-level races in several formats. Academy membership is not essential, but the racing standard is high.

Draft-legal competence is required for relevant events. Performance Assessment events normally form part of the early-season pathway into the series.

Academy criteria, age eligibility and race formats can change. Please use current British Triathlon and regional information before making plans.
